Digital Album of Byzantine Christmas Hymns

In the album LÓGOS, Nektaria Karantzi presents a selection of Byzantine Christmas hymns, combining her solo interpretation with the voices of two choral ensembles she founded to highlight the presence of women in Byzantine chant: the women’s choir Psaltries and the girls’ choir Nektar, comprised of her students and members of the Women in Byzantine Music Worldwide Association.

The word psaltria has a long historical trajectory: in ancient Greek musical culture it denoted a woman who played the lyre, while in the Byzantine and Christian tradition it refers to a woman who chants Byzantine hymns. This multi-layered concept lies at the heart of Karantzi’s artistic and scholarly work for decades, which has gained international recognition for bringing visibility and legitimacy to women’s psaltic artistry.

The title of the album, LÓGOS, refers to the central theological concept of the Word — “ὁ Λόγος σαρξ ἐγένετο” — as expressed in the opening verse of the Gospel of John. This choice serves as the thematic axis of the album, connecting the Nativity of Christ with the spiritual and philosophical dimension of the Logos, conveyed through the contemplative and mystical art of Byzantine hymnography.
